If you find yourself interested in Voodoo and think that it may be something for you, there are a couple of things to consider. Voodoo is not about zombies and all the crazy stuff that is portrayed in the movies. It is an actual religion, a very old one. It is a religion where you honor and serve the Voodoo Lwas (the spirits). Magic is part of Voodoo, but certainly not the main part. People can practice Voodoo without ever practicing magic.
Voodoo chooses you. People meant to practice Voodoo are actually drawn to it. Someone interested in Voodoo because they want to become rich or have control over people-will never excel in the Voodoo. On the other hand, someone who feels drawn to voodoo and the Lwas-who actually fees like they are being called to it (if this is you, then you know what I am talking about), these people are rewarded by the Lwa.
If you are interested in Voodoo (more than a passing fancy), then my first suggestion is to do a bit of research about the different Voodoo Lwas. There are literally thousands of them, but concentrate on the main, more well known ones, this will make a good start. Although there is so much completely inaccurate things written about Voodoo, most of the information out there regarding the Lwas is actually fairly accurate. In doing some research, see if a Lwa in particular really interests you. Are you more drawn to one or two in particular? The different Lwas all have different personalities, different likes and dislikes and different areas that they help in. You want to choose a Lwa that is a good fit for you. The appropriate Lwa will stand out to you, you will feel drawn. When you are just starting out, it is best to pick one Lwa to serve, Down the road, you may feel drawn to serve several Lwa. But in the beginning, I would suggest having one so that you can put you focus on the one. Most people start with a Rada Lwa-these are a group of Lwa who are considered to be more calmer tempered and easier to work with.
After you have chosen a Lwa whom you want to serve, you will want to decide how involved this is going to be. Is this going to be something very simple and basic. Serving the Lwa can be as simple as lighting candles or can be done with an altar with regular offerings.
If you choose to work on spellcasting in Voodoo, you can ask for the Lwa to help in bringing positive results and adding power to your spellcasting. You can also just ask the Lwa to bless your life and help with certain aspects of your life without actually casting magic. Either way, teh Lwas can be very generous and helpful when they are served with honor and respect.
